Biodegradable Leaf Bags Available to North Hempstead Residents
North Hempstead, NY– Pointing to the administration’s commitment to preserving the environment, Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the North Hempstead Town Board took the opportunity of autumn’s approach to remind residents about the availability of biodegradable, paper leaf bags.
Phasing out the use of plastic bags, which does not completely break down into organic material when buried, helps reduce waste and contribute to a greener environment.
“Introducing biodegradable leaf bags to the Town’s waste disposal stream may seem on the surface like an insignificant move but in reality it could pay major dividends if everyone participates in the program,” Supervisor Jon Kaiman said.
The biodegradable paper bags will be sold at a nominal cost of $2 for a bundle of 5 bags. Residents who wish to purchase the bags can do so at the Solid Waste Management Authority facility at 802 West Shore Rd., Port Washington and at the Town’s Aquatic Activity Center at Michael J. Tully Park, 1801 Evergreen Ave., New Hyde Park.
These bags are intended only for yard waste, specifically grass and leaves. Residents are urged to kindly follow these guidelines when using these new bags.
This initiative will ensure that yard waste will not be put in landfills. Instead, it will be transformed into highly desirable compost.
Residents are asked to please put their yard waste in the biodegradable paper bags and place the bags curbsides on their designated collection day.
