Town Senior Commission Welcomes AAA Traffic Safety Expert

 

PORT WASHINGTON (September 3, 2004)Councilman Fred L. Pollack and the Town’s Senior Citizen Advisory Committee, announced that Dr. Bella Dinh-Zarr, the National Director of traffic safety planning for the Automobile Association of America will be the keynote speaker for a forum titled: “Hanging Up the Keys.” The forum will be held at Clinton G. Martin Park on October 26, 2004 at 9:30 a.m.

 

Dr. Dinh-Zarr will discuss many of the factors which older drivers must take into consideration in deciding whether to continue driving.  She will also unveil the AAA’s new self-evaluation of driving skills program for older drivers.

 

Since joining AAA in March 2002, Dr. Dinh-Zarr has been featured on CNN, NPR, Univision, Telemundo, Reader’s Digest and national publications. She has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives on the public health impact of motor vehicle crashes. Currently, she is leading the AAA’s priority initiative called “Lifelong Safe Mobility,” aimed at promoting transportation safety and mobility for seniors. Dr. Dinh-Zarr is a member of the National Academy of Sciences/Transportation Research Board’s Committee on Safe Mobility of Older Persons and the American Public Health Association.

 

Dr. Dinh-Zarr was an undergraduate of Rice University and received both her Master of Public Health degree and her PhD in health policy and injury prevention at the University of Texas School of Public Health.  Dr. Dinh-Zarr trained with the Cochrane Collaboration Injury Group in London and was a CDC Fellow where, as a member of the Motor Vehicle Team, she received the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary’s Award, the CDC Outstanding Scientific Contribution to Public Health Award, and a NHTSA Recognition Award.  She has been a Research Associate at the Texas Transportation Institute and a Scientist at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
