Wetland Planting at Bar Beach

North Hempstead and NOAA Continue Effort to

Improve Water Quality

Port Washington, NYNorth Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman today reaffirmed the Town's commitment to building a sustainable wetland at Bar Beach today by announcing a further volunteer planting effort scheduled for May 22, 2004 funded by the National Ocean and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA).  In addition, Whole Foods Market, the largest retailer of natural and organic foods, has committed to providing volunteers for the event.  The ecological development effort continues to highlight the Town's continuing focus on improving the water quality of the harbors and the environment.

"The value of wetlands is immense," said Supervisor Kaiman.  "Wetlands filter out pollutants from road runoff, help collect sand and debris from entering our waterways, stop soil erosion and act as a fish hatchery for juvenile fish.  They also serve to beautify an old industrial shoreline."

The volunteer planting effort scheduled for Saturday May 22 at 9:00 a.m. is a continuous effort by the Town of North Hempstead and the National Ocean and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) to restore a vital piece of wetlands.  Last year the original construction of the wetland was announced by then Supervisor May Newburger.  Prior to the effort, the wetlands site was littered with concrete, tires, poles and various other kinds of debris.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the May 22nd event should call the Town of North Hempstead at (516) 627-4536.
