Project Independence Reminds Members of Home Help Programs

North Hempstead, NY – The Town of North Hempstead’s innovative senior initiative, Project Independence, is reminding members that there are two crucial home help programs available to members. Project Independence’s partnerships with Rebuilding Together Long Island, Inc. and the Rehabilitation Institute (TRI) Help at Home Program is just one of the many ways the Project Independence program works to help North Hempstead’s senior residents stay in their homes as they age.

“Our partnership with these wonderful organizations means so much to our Project Independence members,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “No one likes to feel dependent on friends and family for small home improvements, or routine maintenance around the house. With Rebuilding Together Long Island, Inc. and the Rehabilitation Institute (TRI) Help at Home Program it’s like having a handy man at your fingertips!”

Rebuilding Together Long Island, Inc. is a program to repair and rehabilitate the homes of low income, elderly and disabled homeowners. The program works to build ramps, grab bars, railings and do small repairs at homes of Project Independence members at no cost. All repairs performed by Rebuilding Together Long Island, Inc. are completed by retired volunteers. This is an income based program,. RTLI gives extra preference to veterans and handicapped individuals.

The TRI Help at Home Program-TRI Supported Employment/Maintenance Training Program is designed to prepare individuals with disabilities to work in entry-level employment. Each student is trained to be proficient in Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations (OSHA). Help at Home will be provided by TRI workers, supervised by their job coaches, to Town residents age 60 and over. There is no charge for the service, but the homeowner/renter must pay for or provide any supplies needed.

Here’s what some Rebuilding Together Long Island, Inc. and the Rehabilitation Institute (TRI) Help at Home Program clients had to say about the services they received:

“The service was excellent. The gentleman regularly updated us with the delivery and construction dates. They were prompt, polite, respectful, knowledgeable, efficient and very well skilled. My mother now has easier access in and out of our home and allows her to maintain her independence and pride,” said a child of Project Independence members who had a ramp built through the Rebuilding Together Long Island, Inc.

“(He was) very pleasant and he and his helpers worked efficiently, leaving no mess behind. I very much appreciate the help provided and hope to be able to take advantage of the service again,” said a Project Independence Member who use TRI for gutter cleaning.

Created in 2006 as an aging-in-place program for the Town’s nearly 60,000 residents over 60, PI has assisted aging residents in remaining in their own homes and familiar surroundings.
