North Hempstead & The Long Island Press Announce Winners of ‘Not In Our Town’ Student Photo Contest

Student photographers to be honored at awards ceremony on May 8 at CGM Park

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Town Board and The Long Island Press announced the winners today of the student photo contest that used the anti-hate initiative Not In Our Town (NIOT) as its theme. The winners and all participants will be honored at an awards ceremony on May 8 at the Clinton G. Martin Park. NIOT addresses issues of hate and bullying, with the goal of building safe, inclusive communities for all. North Hempstead launched its NIOT campaign last year with the Not In Our Town: A Unity & Anti-Hate Conference. Students were asked to take a photo showing how they stand up to hate in their community or school.

“Students from across North Hempstead did an extraordinary job at using the medium of photography to illustrate the mission of Not In Our Town. I am proud and impressed with how they are able to convey this in their schools and their communities,” said Supervisor Bosworth.

"The most successful Not In Our Town communities engage young people as leaders in their efforts to stop bullying, hate and intolerance, so it is exciting to see this diverse group of student photographers sharing their vision with the North Hempstead community. Bravo to the young people, civic leaders and residents in North Hempstead working to create a culture of inclusion for everyone. We can't wait to see what you do next," said Patrice O'Neill Founder and CEO Not In Our Town.
“Photography is a complex and rich medium and can evoke emotion through light and composition and these North Hempstead students did not disappoint. They did an outstanding job depicting the Not In Our Town mission,” said Joanna Austin associate publisher of the Long Island Press. “Photographic evident that we can come together, open lines of communication and build a safer environment for our children and their parents to learn and thrive.”

The Long Island Press featured the winning submissions in its April issue, along with an article and will include the photos in an online photo gallery.
