Town Celebrates the Environment at Recycled Art Contest

North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Town Board and the Office of Sustainability joined together on December 12 at the North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center to unveil an exhibition of recycled art created by students throughout the Town. The 8th Annual 2016 Recycled Art Contest asks students to use recyclable materials made of metal, paper, rubber, plastic or cloth and create their own unique artwork.

The competition was open to all of the students from the 11 school districts in the Town. Each year the contest encourages students to spread the powerful message to “Recycle, Reuse and Rethink,” The pieces of art on display use materials that otherwise would have been dumped in landfills.

Nearly three dozen students were recognized for their creative artwork in various categories, including, Environmental Message, Best Use of Recycled Materials, Best Execution and Creativity. Entrants were judged in the elementary, middle school, high school and group categories. Erin Reilley, the director of the Town’s Office of Sustainability, judged the contest.

Supervisor Bosworth attended the awards ceremony and discussed how this contest promotes the Town’s environmental mission.

“This contest is one of the many wonderful environmental initiatives with which the Town is involved all year long, including so many that involve our local schools,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “I am proud to say that for the first time this year, we have all 11 school districts in the Town participating in the program, as we were proud to welcome Mineola and Roslyn earlier this fall. I am always amazed at the resourcefulness of the students and the powerful environmental messages they convey.”

Other elected officials in attendance included Council Members Peter Zuckerman and Anna Kaplan and Town Clerk Wayne Wink.

All entries will be displayed through January 15, 2017 in the gallery at the North Hempstead “Yes We Can” Community Center gallery.
