North Hempstead’s New PSA Turns the Tables on Pets and their Owners

“How would you feel?” public service announcement switches role of pets and people

North Hempstead, NY – Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth reminds residents of the risks of leaving a pet in a hot car in a new and unique public service announcement that is now airing on North Hempstead TV (NHTV). To get the point across of how serious the dangers of leaving a dog in a hot car are, the new PSA reverses the roles of human and dog and has a person stay in a hot car, while the dog goes into a store. Although it may seem comical, Supervisor Bosworth reiterates the point that if you wouldn’t want to be left in a hot car, you shouldn’t leave your pet in one either.

“A vehicle can very quickly reach a temperature that puts your pet at risk of serious illness or death,” said Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “Even on a day that doesn't seem hot to you and even if you are only gone for a few minutes, you should never leave your pet in a car.”

According to the Humane Society of the United States, if a pet is exposed to high temperatures, look for signs of heat stress-heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. If you see a dog in a car or a pet exhibiting signs of heat stroke, please call 311 or the police immediately.

The PSA stars Communications PR Liason Sam Marksheid as the pooch, and Gangsta the dog, as the “human.”

To view the PSA tune into NHTV on channels 18 or 63 on Cablevision or channel 46 on Verizon
