North Hempstead, NY – North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Council Member Viviana Russell and the Town Board were proud to expand the community garden at the Town’s “Yes We Can” Community Center in New Cassel on May 23, adding five new garden beds, two which are ADA accessible.

Sustainable Long Island (SLI) helped secure the funds needed to install the five additional raised beds and provided the supplies, plants and a garden workshop for volunteers. Volunteers from the local community and student volunteers from Westbury schools participated in the garden expansion.

“We are so grateful to Sustainable Long Island for helping us expand our community garden program here at ‘Yes We Can’,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “There’s an excitement here this spring now as all the participants plants their vegetables and look forward to tending the gardens and reaping the harvest in the weeks to come.”

Two of the new garden beds are ADA compliant and wheelchair accessible. The addition of the raised garden beds will allow residents with disabilities and senior citizens who have trouble bending down to participate in the garden.

The community garden is located on the green space adjacent to the parking lot, located on the southeast side of the “Yes We Can” Community Center at 141 Garden Street, New Cassel.
