Immediate Release Contact: David Chauvin November 15, 2005(516) 869-7794

Manhasset, NY-Supervisor Jon Kaiman and Councilman Wayne Wink invite all who live or work in Manhasset to join a “Vision Process” for Plandome Road that will begin on December 7, 2005 at 7:30pm at the Manhasset High School. The effort will focus on the business corridor, from Northern Boulevard to Webster Avenue. A “Vision Process” is a community-based planning initiative where local governments, local community groups, local businesses and local residents come together to create a shared vision for their community.

“Manhasset is a wonderful place to live but there are concerns about the future in regard to such things as aesthetics and safety,” said Supervisor Kaiman.“I believe the best way to address those concerns is by coming together with everyone who lives and works in the community and develop a shared vision for the future.”

Through visioning, residents break into smaller groups to brainstorm on designated questions and various issues. The exchange of ideas and concerns from each group are compiled and reported to the decision makers. This process presents an opportunity to learn about the options available on any given subject while providing a forum for the expression of concerns, ideas, and opinions. Specific areas of concern that will be addressed for Plandome Road include: walkability, pedestrian safety, the aesthetic character of the street, and opportunities for enhancing existing building facades.

Councilman Wink noted, “This vision process will provide a unique opportunity for residents and business owners in Manhasset to create a blueprint for the continued vitality of the downtown area. The future of Plandome Road is in your hands. We invite you to take part in this exciting project.”

Diane Harrigan, a representative from the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce added, “I want to encourage people to participate and get involved in this program and help keep Plandome Road safer.”

This visioning model is being implemented throughout North Hempstead in a variety of communities including: Port Washington, Great Neck, Carle Place, Roslyn Heights, and New Cassel. These meetings have covered a wide range of topics, from developing a commercial corridor and business district to renovating a local park to exploring a more coordinated regional approach to planning for our future.
