North Hempstead Town Board Round Up
Board sets date for capital plan work session and honors Manhasset swimming

North Hempstead, NY – The North Hempstead Town Board held their public meeting at Town Hall on April 1st. Here were some of the highlights:

Manhasset H.S. Swimming Honored
Prior to the meeting, the Town Board honored the Manhasset High School Girls Swimming and Diving Team. The team who had eight girls qualify for the New York State Section VIII Championships in Ithaca on November 22nd and 23rd. The total number of qualifiers was the highest total in school history, and school records were set this season both the 200 yard medley and 200 yard free relays.

Presentation Given on New Baywalk Trail
A presentation was given on the Baywalk Trail project from Bob Retnauer, a landscape architect retained by the Town to undertake the design effort of the trail which will extend from an existing portion in the Village of Port Washington North to Mill Pond to Town Dock. The completed trail will include a waterfront promenade with new seating, lighting, signage and piers, and will accommodate walkers, joggers, fishers, boaters and more. This project is still in the planning and design phase.

Consultant Hired for PSEG- LI Project
The Town Board unanimously approved the hiring of Cable Consultants, Inc. for the purpose of evaluating proposals provided by PSEG Long Island regarding burying transmission wires as part of the their Electric Reliability Improvements Project. “I believe that the Town board and the residents of North Hempstead will benefit greatly from the expert advice of a professional consultant on this complex issue,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “I thank Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio for her suggestion.”

Town Board Work Session Announced to Discuss Capital Plan
The Town Board reminded residents that a date has been set for a public work session on April 28th at 10:00am at Town Hall to discuss the 2014-2015 capital plan. “This aligns with my administration’s mission of providing an open and transparent government,” Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said. The meeting will include discussion of $17 million in bonding that was approved for projects at the March 11th Town Board meeting.

CO Detector Legislation Tabled
A hearing was held on a proposed local law to amend the Town’s building code to require carbon monoxide detectors in all places of assembly and public assembly in order to provide greater protection to Town residents and businesses. Supervisor Bosworth suggested that the hearing continue at the April 22 meeting to consider revising the amendment to require “digital screen CO detectors.” According to Neal Lewis, executive director of The Sustainability Institute, these devices monitor extremely low levels of CO, which can also be very dangerous.

“Mr. Lewis represented some interesting suggestions to the board that I believe could make our proposed amendment even stronger and I believe that we need to continue the discussion on this important issue,” said Bosworth.
