Local Students Walk the Runway in North Hempstead’s 2nd Annual “Trashion Show”

Westbury, NY –Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board welcomed scores of students and proud parents to the “Yes We Can” Community Center in Westbury on January 16th for the Town’s 2nd Annual “Trashion Show.”

For the second year in a row, the event featured elementary, middle, and high school students who created and modeled apparel from recycled materials. It was organized through the Town’s Office of Sustainability.

“North Hempstead continues to find innovative ways to educate our children about the environment, and this is just another example,” Supervisor Bosworth said. “I am truly astounded by the creativity of these children and their willingness model these fashions on stage so that we can all appreciate them.”

All the students who took part in this year’s “Trashion Show” come from one of the school districts that take part in the Town’s comprehensive School Recycling Partnership Program.

All entrants have the opportunity to participate in the show, and winners were chosen via the judging round that took place on January 13th. Nearly three-dozen students were chosen as winners from a field of more than sixty. High school students came from New Hyde Park Memorial, Westbury, Great Neck South, and Carle Place. Middle school students came from Weber Middle School of Port Washington and Great Neck North, and elementary school students were from Munsey Park and Notre Dame of New Hyde Park.

This year, Hirshleifer’s of Americana Manhasset, a destination for over a century for exclusive European and American couture, was the proud sponsor of the show. Shelley, Lori and Caryn Hirshleifer, principals of the family-owned business, all served as masters of ceremonies for the event.

“When I first saw a sample of last year’s designs I thought it was breathtaking and that this is an event that we had to be a part of,” Lori Hirshleifer said. She mentioned that some mainstream fashion designers have even started using recycled materials in their clothing, including Greg Lauren, whose apparel is sold at Hirshleifer’s.

Pieces from the show will be displayed at the gallery at the “Yes We Can” Community Center.
