North Hempstead Honors LI Chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart

Manhasset, NY – On Tuesday, December 10th, North Hempstead Supervisor John Riordan and the Town Board honored the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Long Island Chapter No. 417 for the numerous sacrifices they have made and their steadfast commitment to defend our nation’s freedom. Mr. Erle Mutz, Commander Bob Chiappone, and Mr. Michael Dolan were on hand to receive the award.

The Supervisor and Town Board also declared December 11th, a day of special recognition throughout the Town for their efforts.

“It is extremely important for all of us to recognize the Military Order of the Purple Heart in our community for their sacrifices made and dedication rendered in defending our freedoms,” Councilman Angelo Ferrara said.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart’s mission is to promote patriotism, support necessary legislative initiatives, and provide service to all veterans and their families. The Order advocates for the teaching and influencing of America’s youth and new citizens in loyal appreciation of the heritage of American citizenship with its responsibilities, rights, and privileges.

The Purple Heart medal itself is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 5, 1917. It is the oldest award still actively being given to military members.
