TOWN OF NORTH
HEMPSTEAD RECEIVES GRANT FOR STUDY TO MAKE NEW CASSEL A BROWNFIELD OPPORTUNITY AREA
The New York State Department of
State has awarded the Town of North
Hempstead with a $180,000
Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) grant to
nominate the New Cassel area as a Brownfield Opportunity Area.
The BOA grant will make it possible for the Town to
formulate an area-wide
approach to brownfield redevelopment in New Cassel, thereby providing
the Town with significant planning,
land use and redevelopment tools to use in New Cassel’s revitalization.
The grant builds on the Town’s achievement utilizing a
$200,000 Brownfields Pilot Demonstration grant from the
United States Environmental Protection Agency.
The Town used the EPA grant to identify and rank 48 potential brownfield sites,
conduct Phase I historical environmental
investigations of 10 sites, and conducted Phase II soil investigations of three
sites.
The BOA grant and designation are important steps in Town’s
efforts to revitalize New Cassel. BOA
designation would provide developers with certain tax incentives and benefits
in connection with the area’s redevelopment.
