Town Announces 2nd Annual WinterFest featuring Special Olympics Polar Plunge
Manhasset, NY--Picture this: Dressed in swimwear, you race across packed sand and plunge waist-deep into the churning sea. Relatives and friends root for you from the shoreline as the thrill-seeker in you punches the frosty air. Yes, it’s the dead of winter and the ocean is arctic. But hey, you remind yourself, I’m “Freezin’ for a Reason!”
Supervisor Jon Kaiman and the Town of North Hempstead’s Business & Tourism Development Corporation, is proud to announce the second annual WinterFest featuring the Special Olympics Polar Plunge. Registration for the event on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at North Hempstead Beach Park begins at 9a.m. The Polar Plunge is at noon.
“I invite everyone to come join us in this fun-filled fund-raiser benefiting a great cause,” Supervisor Kaiman said. “I am looking forward to a day of entertaining activities during which—for the third year in a row—I too, will be Plunging into the frigid waters of Hempstead Harbor!”
As well as the Polar Plunge, WinterFest activities will include live music and entertainment courtesy of Reggae artist Denzel Botus, amusement for the children such as face painting, informational displays sponsored by the Nassau County Police Department, a free breakfast provided by Panera Bread, and much more!
The Polar Plunge is sponsored by the New York-Long Island Region of the Special Olympics. The event is organized to help pay for year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-style sports for intellectually-challenged children and adults.
To register for the Polar Plunge log on to the website where you can create your own Personal Plunge Page and tell the story of why you are plunging and what Special Olympics means to you. Plungers are asked to raise a minimum of $100 to take the plunge, upon which they will receive a free logoed sweatshirt. To get started, please visit www.SpecialOlympicsNY.org or call 311.
Winterfest is brought to you in partnership with the BTDC, Panera Bread, Police Benevolent Association Inc., GEICO, NuBest, NYS Fraternal Order of Police, Knights of Columbus, Law Enforcement Torch Run, Capital One, New York Lottery, NYSUL, Life Corporation, Apple & Eve, and CSEA.
Supervisor Kaiman added, “I want to thank each co-sponsor, especially Panera Bread, for their generous commitment and I look forward to joining them in making this the best Polar Plunge yet.”
