Supervisor Bosworth Urges Residents to be Prepared Drivers this Winter

North Hempstead, NY – With winter quickly approaching, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board would like to remind residents of some important winter driving tips. “As we know from last winter, winter storms can range from a moderate snow to a blinding blizzard that lasts for several days,” said Supervisor Bosworth. “Regardless of the severity of a winter storm, the Town of North Hempstead is committed to keeping you safe as you commute to work and drive around the Town.”

Supervisor Bosworth would like to remind residents that:

  • Vehicles are prohibited from parking in most Town parking lots between the hours of 3 a.m. and 6 a.m allowing for the Town to clean the lots and remove snow and ice.
  • Residents and businesses are required to remove snow and ice from the sidewalk, within four hours after the snow has ceased. The time between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. shall not be included in the time requirements.
  • Depending on the severity of the storm, parking lots may be closed for extended periods of time to help remove excess snow and ice.
  • If a parking lot is obstructed with snow or ice, please notify the Town by contacting 311.
  • All vehicles are required to park in a marked parking space.
  • Residents should stay tuned to local news and access the Town’s website at www.northhempsteadny.gov and the Long Island Rail Road’s website at www.mta.info/lirr for schedule updates and pivotal information.
  • Residents can stay connected to the latest snow-related news by liking the Town’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/townofnorthhempstead) or following their Twitter page (www.twitter.com/northhempstead).
  • During a severe snowstorm the Town encourages you to work from home and avoid driving.
  • Always consider carpooling or being dropped off to help alleviate obstructions to snow plowing efforts. With your help, the Town and other municipalities can remove the snow and ice in a timely manner.
If you have any questions or concerns, please call North Hempstead’s 311 Call Center. Simply dial 311 within the Town of North Hempstead, or (516) 869-6311 if you’re calling from outside the Town.
