Town Announces the Extension of the Construction Reconciliation Period

North Hempstead, NY –During the January 7th Town Board meeting, the North Hempstead Town Board unanimously voted to extend the Buildings Department temporary reconciliation period which had expired at the end of 2013. This measure suspends the four times fee that residents would have incurred for construction, improvements and alterations done without proper permits and inspections.

“The Town of North Hempstead is committed to working with our residents to ensure that buildings and homes are up to code. With safety as a key priority, we want to make the process of navigating through the Buildings Department simpler and more convenient for all parties involved,” said Supervisor Judi Bosworth.

This temporary reconciliation program applies to applications for building and plumbing permits to “maintain” construction, improvements and alterations, and having the work verified by a Town inspector for code compliance. Applications for “maintains” that are currently pending in the Buildings Department will also be eligible to participate in the reconciliation program.

Applications to “maintain” unauthorized improvements that would normally be subjected to a fee equaling four times the amount noted in the Town’s fee schedule will now be subject to the regular permit fee until December 31, 2014.

Supervisor Bosworth said that the reconciliation period will be evaluated again later in the year prior to the Town Board considering whether to extend the period further.
