DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS (Town Web Site) The Town of North Hempstead seeks an experienced professional to serve as Director of Communications. The Director manages the Town’s overall communications program, including the design and development of a Town communications plan, management of media relations, community outreach and constituent service, inter and intranet services, and the Town’s television studio and programming for multiple cable channels. The Department includes a mix of full and part-time staff and retained media consultants. North Hempstead , a community on the North Shore of Long Island, is home to a diverse, educated and engaged population of some 225,000. Over the past four years the Town has greatly enhanced its communications efforts, including plans for construction of a state-of-the-art television studio to supplement its existing facility, the addition of new cable channels, and the development of web-based strategies including inter-active customer service and video on-demand. The Director of Communications will oversee these new programs, as well as well-established relations with local and NYC media, a growing constituent outreach program which includes regular town wide mailings, and public relations for a diverse mix of services and programs, including an award-winning golf course and recreation complex, a 311 constituent service system and TownStat performance management system, and a nationally-recognized senior support program called “Project Independence” which helps elderly residents age-in-place in their own homes and communities. The Director will also participate at senior staff meetings, strategic planning sessions, and community meetings, as well as preparing and managing a budget and five-year capital plan. Candidates should have a minimum of ten years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism or other related fields, including management experience. Government experience a plus. A bachelors or advanced degree is preferred. Excellent benefits and good salary, with pension, medical, and generous paid leave.
