COMMISSIONER OF BUILDINGS

The Town of North Hempstead seeks an experienced professional to serve as Commissioner of the Department of Building and Safety Inspection. The Commissioner is responsible for all facets of management of the Department, its 45 employees and $4 million in budget and expenses.

The Department enforces the provisions of the New York State building code, the Town's zoning by-laws, and all other relevant state and local codes, as well as regulations and requirements of special permits and variances issued by the Board of Zoning Appeals. Department staff handle issues relating to building construction techniques and processes, materials and products, design preparation and plan review. The management and customer service demands of the Department require a Commissioner with strong inter-personal skills, strong computer and technical skills, a commitment to training and staff development, and the ability to set and maintain the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

Candidates should have 10 years of experience in the building industry and/or code enforcement, including at least five years of management experience. A bachelors or advanced degree in Architecture, Engineering, Management, Law, Law Enforcement or a related field is preferred. Certification as a licensed Architect, Engineer, or New York State Certified Code Enforcement Official, or extensive experience with code enforcement and public safety, is also preferred.
