FOOD PROGRAMS

FOOD STAMPS

Families with low asset and income levels may be eligible for food stamps.
When applying for food stamps, bring rent receipts, utility bills, proof of
income, bankbooks, receipts of medical expenses and other items that can
substantiate eligibility for this program. Since financial requirements

FANS PROGRAMS

The non-profit fundraising organization Friends Assisting Nassau Seniors (FANS) provides weekend meals to eligible participants of the Homebound Meal Delivery Program.

FOOD AND NUTRITION PROGRAM (FAN)

The Catholic Charities Food and Nutrition Program (FAN) is part of the National Commodity Supplemental Food Program that is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  The program provides monthly free supplementary food (juice, cheese, dry cereal, rice, beans, etc.) to seniors 60 years or older who meet financial guidelines.

A Mobile Food Van visits various locations throughout the Town.  To become a mobile van site you must have 30 new participants.

To be certified you must supply proof of date of birth, income verification, proof of residence and personal I.D.  For program information, financial guidelines and mobile van sites nearest to you please call Catholic Charities at (631) 789-9533.

MEALS ON WHEELS

Meals on Wheels provides participants one hot meal and a cold supper delivered between 11 a.m. and 2 pm, Monday through Friday.

To be eligible for the program you must be:

-     60 years of age

-     a resident of Nassau County

-      homebound-unable to leave the house unassisted

-     living alone and unable to meet nutritional needs

-     unable to cook or shop due to ill health

-     unable to carry out procedures to ensure meal safely

SENIOR CENTER NUTRITION SITES (located in North Hempstead)

Senior Citizen Nutrition Sites provide a hot meal at lunchtime for senior citizens with a voluntary contribution of $2.00 a day.  Most sites provide transportation.  For more information see senior clubs and centers and Nutrition Sites marked *.
